Naxos port & harbour guide
The harbour of Chora, from the Portara to the quay
Naxos is the largest island of the Cyclades, and almost every arrival starts in the same place: the harbour of Chora, the island's main town on the west coast. Ferries tie up at the main quay, visiting yachts berth in the small Naxos marina a few minutes' walk away, and the Portara, the marble gateway of an unfinished 6th-century BC temple, stands on its islet right beside the harbour entrance.
naxosport.com gathers the practical side of that harbour in one place. The yachtsman dashboard shows live wind, gusts, waves and sea temperature at Naxos port, a 48-hour wind chart, a meltemi watch and which anchorages are exposed to the wind right now. The ferries guide explains how to get to Naxos from Piraeus, Rafina and the neighbouring islands and where to check live timetables. The interactive map of Naxos puts the harbour, the Portara, the Kastro, the anchorages and the beaches on one chart, and the services directory groups what crews and visitors ask for, from provisioning and fuel to transfers and car rental.
Chora Naxos itself sits right on the water. The seafront promenade is lined with cafés and tavernas, and the lanes of the old town climb from the port to the Venetian Kastro. Naxos Island National Airport is about 3 km from town, near Agios Prokopios, and the sandy beaches of the west coast begin at Agios Georgios, on the edge of Chora.
In summer the Aegean brings the meltemi, a strong northerly wind that can build quickly and affect ferries and small boats alike. Checking the Naxos weather and wind before a crossing, a day at anchor or a beach trip is part of daily life here, which is why the live conditions are the first thing you see on this site.
naxosport.com is an independent, unofficial guide. It is not the port authority. Official information about the port of Naxos, including berthing fees, regulations, berth applications and notices, is published by the Municipal Port Fund of Naxos on portofnaxos.com. Our forecasts and positions are indicative and not for navigation. Local businesses can list their services here.
